“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.” – Matthew 6:16
A hypocrite is an actor – one who puts on a show or puts up a façade for others to see. We do this when we want to manipulate how people perceive us without having to make the necessary changes.
Christ’s goal is not for us to appear pious or religious, but to be like Him. We need to be honest with ourselves and with the Holy Spirit. Are we seeking Him for transformation, revelation, and relationship, or just putting on a show in an attempt to fool other people, ourselves, or even God?
Prayer: Jesus, I love You. Thank You for being the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Try me and know me, see if there is any wicked way in me and lead in the way everlasting. God, help me not to be fake. As painful as it may be, expose my hypocrisy and insecurity and grant me the healing grace to be better, to do better, and to become more like You. Amen.
