17 January 2022 – Rend Your Hearts

“‘Even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.’ Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and He relents from sending calamity.”

– Joel 2:12-13

To rend means to tear. What God is saying is that He desires us to see our sin the way that He does and humble ourselves as a result. He wants us to come to a place of brokenness so that He can heal us as we align with Him. Our sin deserves the harshest of punishment, but Christ already paid that price on the cross. Fasting is a time were we intentionally get God’s perspective and mourn over our sin and return to our God who has every right to judge us but shows love and mercy instead.

Prayer: Jesus, I love You. Thank You for paying the price for my sin and making a way back to Father’s house. Help me to see my sin the way You do. Help me to come to the end of myself so that I may get ahold of You. Thank You for Your love and mercy as I am in desperate need of both. Amen.
