When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. – Matthew 6:16-18
So much of our culture is driven by self-promotion and an almost total lack of substance. Many live much of their lives on social media putting up a facade for the world to see. Jesus tells us that fasting is to be done privately, without all the religious pomp and circumstance. This doesn’t mean that no one can ever know that you are on a fast, but that you are not blasting a trumpet and drawing attention to yourself.
He also promises that when we fast for an audience of One, that we will be rewarded openly; not with likes and shares but with revelation, transformation, and grace that will be evident to others.
Fast unto the Lord and He will put you on display. Fast for attention and all you’ll get are hunger pains.
Prayer: Jesus, I love You. I want to love You more. Thank You for my life and all that You have blessed me with. Help me to keep my motives and actions in check as I focus on what You are saying and doing. Please give me the wisdom and grace I need to live a life that is pleasing to You. Amen.
