Then John’s disciples came and asked Him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the Bridegroom mourn while He is with them? The time will come when the Bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.” – Matthew 9:14-15
Jesus is our Bridegroom, the Groom-To-Be of His Bride – the church. In the Great Commission (Matthew 28:20) Jesus promised that He would be with us always… but then He left. He told His disciples to wait until they receive the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit is how Jesus can be with us and within us. He is Jesus gives us His mind and reveals His word. One of the main purposes of fasting is to get more of the Bridegroom, and also so we can act and think more like the bride of Christ. We fast to get more of Him and to be closer to Him. Do You want more of the Bridegroom? Continue pressing in to this fast. “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’” – Revelation 22:17
