Day 10 of 21: Overflow

Isaiah 55:2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?

Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit

Psalm 23:5 …You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

It is so easy to get filled up with things that don’t satisfy. In fact, this is one of the enemy’s greatest strategies – one that is crippling our generation. We, as a culture, waste so much time on social media, video games, TV, and other forms of entertainment. While they may have their place, they offer no real rest or rejuvenation. When’s the last time you wasted an hour on Instagram or YouTube and felt great about it.

God invites us to sit at His feet and be filled by His Spirit. To “be filled” in Ephesians 5 means two things simultaneously: to be filled all the way to the top, and to be filled continually (every day, hour, and minute). When we are filled with the satisfying substance of God’s presence, He fills up the cup of our souls. Linger in His presence and in the secret place, and He will cause your cup to overflow.

It is out of the overflow that we are serve others and face the day with. Instead, many of us are barely making it scraping the bottom of the barrel and wonder why we are so exhausted and irritable. God does not desire that we live at bare minimum but that we would have “…life and life to the full” (John 10:10).

Make time for Him. Put down the phone. Turn off the TV. Get alone with God and get into His word, prayer, and worship. Invite the Holy Spirit to come and meet with you. Hear Jesus knocking on the door of your soul and your schedule. Invite Him to come in and dine with you. Watch how He nourishes your soul with Himself and how He satisfies you in a way that food or entertainment never can.

Jesus, I need You today. I love You and thank You that You are the only One who can satisfy my soul. Help me to love You more than anything else. Help me to destroy the idols of flesh and entertainment in my life. Let my schedule and recreation be pleasing and worship unto You. Re-create me in Your presence that I may be strengthened by Your love. Help me to be like You and to love others and serve them out of the overflow. In Your name I pray, amen.
