The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let them ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to them.
The fear of the Lord does not mean to be afraid of the Lord, but to develop a healthy fear for the consequences of being out of alignment with Him. It’s like the fear that comes when you get too close to the edge of a cliff, or if you unexpectedly encounter a wild animal. This fear is to save your life and to keep you from harm.
Fearing the Lord means to see the way He sees – to love what He loves and hate what He hates. “When you see how God sees, then you will do what He says.” – Pastor Andy Stanley.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and as we ask for it and seek wisdom and understanding we will find the knowledge of God. In Matthew 7:23 we see Jesus bringing judgment to those that were around the things of God but never grew in the fear of the Lord and, therefore, never knew Him.
Proverbs 2 instructs us to cry out for discernment and understanding. This is not a polite request, but rather a desperate plea. We must first go to God, the source of all wisdom and knowledge, then we must get serious about asking Him for wisdom, understanding, and discernment. As we do, He will begin to teach us His ways by the Holy Spirit and we start to grow in the fear of the Lord. When this happens, we will start to not just know about God, but get to know Him personally and intimately.
Lord I love You. Thank You for today. You are Holy and the source of all wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. I need Your wisdom, and I am asking that You would reveal Yourself to me. Give me understanding and discernment. Help me to grow in the fear of the Lord. My life, soul, and eternity depend on You. Make me desperate for You. I don’t want to be comfortable with simply learning about You from a distance, show me who You are Yourself that I may fear You, know You, and love You. In Jesus name, amen.
