Entitlement & Expectation – 11.22.25

Scripture

Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

Observation

For the last post in this series, I want to look at something that has grieved the Lord and caused many to become offended and leave their church, marriages, job, etc.: expectations and entitlement. We all have expectations. Some are realistic, whereas others leave us frustrated and disappointed when they are met with reality. We all expect to take our next breath, to execute our plan for the day, and have some idea about what we want for dinner. Frustration happens when what we expect does not happen.

Entitlement is when our expectations turn into personal demands. We believe that it is our right and if everyone around us does not conform to our expectations, then a great cosmic injustice has occurred. It is based in pride, selfishness, and an unrealistic view of reality. We are owed nothing. We deserve nothing. In fact, what we do deserve is death and punishment for our sin. Thank You Jesus for Your love and mercy!!!

Application

We need to do war with any trace of entitlement in our lives. There is no place for that in the kingdom. Even Jesus said that He didn’t come to be served, but to serve. How much more should that be our attitude. We also need to be very careful about our expectations. Unmet expectations are why many become frustrated, angry, bitter, and offended. We must hold our expectations before the Lord with the question, “But what do You say, Holy Spirit.”

We should also develop a holy wonder and anticipation. It is a mixture of faith and the desire to see God move. But we come to Him, a church event, our prayer time, our day, etc. and allow Him to do His will, His way, in His timing and refuse to become offended. When we do get frustrated and angry, we must Go to God and let Him speak to the issue. Be angry and do not sin (Ephesians 4:26).

Prayer of Repentance

Lord Jesus, I love You. Thank You for today. I repent for any area or feelings of entitlement in my life. Thank You for Your mercy and forgiveness. I also repent for holding onto my expectations tighter than on to You. I ask forgiveness for any area of offense toward You, my pastors, my spouse, or anyone that You reveal to me. Help me to develop a holy anticipation to see You move without placing my own demands and expectations upon You or others. Lord, grow my faith in You and give me strength to wait upon You. Amen.
