Day 5 of 21: January 15, 2024
Scripture
Matthew 6:24 No one is able to serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and money.
Observation
Any time we make anything of a greater priority than God, we are moving toward idolatry, treason, and adultery against the Lord. We start giving in to compromise. This verse can be rewritten to read “You are not able to serve God and ______” (fill in the blank with what you love and serve more than God). This is what James means in James 4:8 when he writes, “…cleanse your hearts you double-minded.” Most of the time, if we are torn between Jesus and anything else, we don’t end up choosing Jesus. The eternal God of the universe – the King of Kings – didn’t die, rise again, call you, and empower you just to compete with TikTok or TV. He loves you completely and wants your complete devotion, not just your sloppy seconds after you get done serving yourself.
Application
This doesn’t mean that we quit our jobs, leave our families, and sell all our possessions. This means that we put away the things that keep up from obeying Jesus immediately. Remember, as John Bevere says, “Delayed obedience is disobedience.” It means we put things in their proper priority in our lives; that we don’t make Jesus second to anything or anyone in our lives.
Prayer
Lord, I love You. Thank You for today. I ask for forgiveness for my idolatry and putting things before You in my life. Please give me the wisdom and grace to get into alignment with Your will. Let Your kingdom come and will be done in my heart, mind, and life. Amen.
Prayer Points
– More of the Holy Spirit and that He would have more of us.
– That we would grow in the fear of the Lord.
– That we would grow in humility and revelation.
