Scripture:
1 Corinthians 9:26-27 (MSG) I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No lazy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.
Observation:
The Message translation paints a vivid picture of what it takes to win: the Apostle Paul expresses to the church at Corinth that there is a prize at the end of the race and only the one who finishes wins the prize. What is the prize? It’s Jesus Christ. It’s finishing this life well for His glory! We run with His name written on our jersey – we represent Him. When we give it our all, we glorify His name. When we run this faith-race with all our efforts, we are not just running to win but running with great discipline for an imperishable crown.
Application:
Physical discipline is good. When we choose a life to make better diet choices, working out, getting rest, our bodies will become strong. When we spiritually discipline ourselves, we get stronger in our faith, in our relationship with God, and we learn to make better choices in life – ones that glory God. The Apostle Paul is telling us that there is only one way to win the race, and that is to give it your all, stay disciplined, train for godliness, and trust the process. Discipline means to stay committed even when you don’t feel it. Press on towards Christ, even when our flesh doesn’t feel it!
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for showing us the Way. Thank you for sending Your Son, Jesus, to make a way back to you. I repent of growing weary and wanting to throw in the towel when life gets hard. Please help me to endure this race and to give it my all. Strengthen me through your Holy Spirit so that I would glorify You on earth. In Jesus name. Amen.
