The Fear of the Lord: Day 5 of 7

SCRIPTURE:

Exodus 20:20 Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.

OBSERVATION: In this one verse, Moses is saying quite a bit. The children of Israel were at Mt. Sinai and saw the fire, smoke, and lightning, and they heard the thundering of the voice of God. They were terrified. Moses was explaining to them an important truth: If you fear the Lord, you won’t be afraid of anything else.

APPLICATION: Fearing the Lord does not mean being afraid of Him. It means being afraid of being apart from Him. Drawing near to God (James 4:8) does come at a cost. We must purify ourselves and set ourselves apart from sin, our flesh, and the world, but when we stay close to God we don’t have to fear the enemy or anything else (Psalm 23:4).

PRAYER: Lord, I love You. Thank You for today. You are holy. Help me to be holy as You are. Teach me to fear You, to stay close when everything around me is pulling me away from You. Teach me to fear, honor, revere, and respect Your presence and Your name which is upon me. Thank You for Your mercy and grace. Teach my heart how much it truly needs You. Amen.
