Point of Repentance: Ungratefulness
.
Scripture:
Luke 17:15-19 When he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”
.
Observation:
Giving thanks is a spiritual discipline and a principle, but it is also simply decent, kind, and respectful. Too often, we assume God’s goodness and, therefore, take it for granted. We, many times, would sooner thank a stranger for holding open a door than the God who saved, healed, delivered, and restored us.
This is a major reason why we struggle with so much anxiety. Philippians 4:6-7 exhorts us to, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (NKJV). When we are not prayerful and thankful, we are not accessing God’s supernatural peace.
This is why ten lepers were healed in their body of leprosy, but only the one who thanked Jesus was made well – whole and at peace in his soul.
.
Application:
We must cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Get into the habit of thanking God first thing in the morning, and last thing at night. In your prayer times, start off by forcing yourself to remember the good things God has done and to thank Him for them.
.
Prayer of Repentance:
Lord, You have done so much for me and my family. I repent for not thanking You. Today, I want to say thank You for saving me, bringing me into Your family, healing me, restoring me, for never giving up on me, for loving me, and for sending Your Son to die for me (continue to thank God for what He has done for you, personally).
