Scripture:
Hebrews 12:28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.
Colossians 1:13–14 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Observation
The kingdom of heaven is a gift that is received through repentance and accepting Jesus into our hearts. Colossians states how we’re no longer bound in darkness. Hebrews explains to be grateful expressing it through worship. Sounds simple enough, but like any culture, civilization and any established nation, there’s a way of living that should be exercised and lived out.
Application:
The kingdom of heaven is often referred to as the “upside down kingdom” why? Well, because it’s so contrary to the physical fallen nature we live in today.
Our culture would say, be overly careful with your children to not hurt their feelings or cause trauma. The kingdom of heaven says to not spare discipline otherwise you’re communicating hatred towards your children (Proverbs 13:24 paraphrased).
Our culture would say work hard, sleep when you’re dead. The kingdom of heaven says to keep the sabbath holy and to rest (Exodus 20:8-11).
Our culture would say to get into debt, you deserve the brand-new car and beach vacation. The kingdom says to not owe anyone anything except for love (Romans 13:8-10) and how a good man even leaves an inheritance for their children’s children (Proverbs 13:22).
Our culture would say it’s ok to live with your boyfriend or girlfriend and have sex outside of marriage. The kingdom of heaven says that the marriage bed is honorable and should be kept holy (Hebrews 13:4).
We’re naturally bent and inclined to follow the patterns of this fallen world but by the power of the Holy Spirit we can have a transformed mind as we walk into our new citizenship in Christ Jesus.
Ask the Lord today what areas of your life you haven’t surrendered fully to the new citizenship of heaven: struggling to tithe, having issues with integrity, keeping your eyes pure, can’t stop gossiping or complaining, struggling with laziness and passivity are sometimes overlooked as normal. But my friend, when we surrender our struggles to Him, He cleanses us and helps us in our time of need.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for your word that it is alive and active still today. Help me to walk worthy of citizenship in the kingdom of heaven. Thank you for accepting me and giving me a place at the table with You. Help me Lord, to recognize the areas of my life that reflect this fallen nature instead of Your Holy kingdom. Help me to be more like You, in Jesus’ name, amen.
